Hungarian operators renew 900MHZ and 1800MHZ licences

Hungary has successfully auctioned licences for mobile spectrum in the 900MHz and 1800MHz bands.

As reported by CommsUpdate, Magyar Telekom, Telenor Hungary and Vodafone Hungary have all renewed their licences, with each operator securing 40MHz of spectrum in the 1800MHz band. In the 900MHz band, Magyar obtained 16MHz, Telenor 26MHz, and Vodafone 18MHz.

The auction, conducted by Hungary’s National Media & Infocommunications Authority (Nemzeti Media- es Hirkozlesi Hatosag, NMHH), generated a total of HUF150.2 billion (US$505 million), with HUF73.8 billion spent on 900MHz frequencies and HUF76.4 billion on the 1800MHz band.

All the spectrum covered by these licences is currently in use for 2G, 3G and 4G networks, with the validity period of the new permits set to commence in April 2022 and last until April 2037. Operators have an option of extending their licence by an additional five years.
