Paraguay’s regulator Conatel (Consejo Nacional de Telecomunicaciones) has agreed to renew Claro and Tigo’s 4G AWS licences.
Local news outlet La Nacion reported that the operators have agreed to additional “social commitments” in order to secure the renewal. These are expected to include extending connectivity to rural telecentres, as well as supplying equipment.
TeleGeography reports that Tigo and Claro originally received their 1700MHz/2100MHz 4G licences in December 2015 for a fee of US$45 million. Both operators had paid this amount in full by February 2016, clearing them to launch commercial services in April that year.
Conatel issues licences for a standard validity period of five years, but operators are able to request renewals.
