Philippines-based operator PLDT stated it blocked over 23 million spam texts over the span of three days, which were attempts to access consumer personal data, reported Bloomberg.
The malicious messages were sent between June 11 to June 14, all of which contained phishing websites that appear to be from legitimate brands, to get consumers to fill in their personal details, said PLDT.
PLDT stated it blocked over 78,000 SIM cards it found were from actors attempting to access personal data illegally and invested PHP3 billion (US$55.6 million) to tackle cybersecurity attacks.
Rival operator Globe Telecom revealed it blocked over one billion malicious messages last year. The Philippines’ National Privacy Commission said in November 2021 that a global crime organisation was the reason for the hike in phishing messages.
