Liberia’s Lonestar boosts mobile money and social media offerings

Liberian operator Lonestar Cell MTN has announced two initiatives to make mobile payment and social media access easier for its customers.

Access Bank Liberia customers can now send money from their MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) accounts to their bank accounts.

To access this service, Access Bank customers will have to visit their nearest branch to link their bank account to their Mobile Money account, dial a special code on their phones, make sure they have their account numbers ready, and follow the prompts.

Access Bank customers who are not yet registered on MoMo can join with a free sign-up process. The upshot is an addition to the growing trend in Africa to enable services that minimise cash use and, it is hoped, reduce banking hall queues.

But that’s not all. The Liberian operator is now giving its customers free access to Facebook through its Facebook Flex service. Lonestar Cell MTN customers can browse, post, update their status or comment on posts for free without using up their data allowance. All they have to do is connect to Facebook using the android app or visit the mobile site through their phone’s browser and select the Free Mode.

Customers can switch from Free Mode to Data Mode to view and interact with photos and videos.
