ClaroVTR signs deal to boost fibre business

Chile’s ClaroVTR joint venture has signed a 15-year agreement with fibre optics company OnNet Fibra, which will allow the migration of the joint venture's cable modem customers to fibre optics.

OnNet Fibra is owned by multinational telecommunications company Telefónica and investment firm KKR. Under the agreement, 4.3 million homes passed with fibre – the entire OnNet Fibra network – will be added to the networks of Claro and VTR. Local reports say that integration with OnNet networks is to begin immediately.

And that’s not the only recent fibre deal involving OnNet. As we reported in December, a US$432million infrastructure deal between service provider Entel and OnNet Fibra in Chile has allowed OnNet to acquire Entel's fibre network in a deal that allows Entel to go on using the infrastructure.

According to the BNamericas news service, late 2023 figures from regulator Subtel give Claro 246,960 and VTR 971,030 modem clients. These customers will presumably be part of the migration. There are already 115,049 homes connected to VTR fibre and 20,960 to Claro fibre.

Local news services report that OnNet plans to spend US$120 million in the next three years to consolidate its growth; it aims to reach five million homes passed.

It was in late 2022 that Liberty Latin America, a leading communications company, which operates in Chile under the consumer brand VTR, and América Móvil, the parent company of Claro Chile, announced that they had received approval from Chile's National Economic Prosecutor's Office (FNE) and completed the transaction to combine their respective operations in Chile to form the 50:50 joint venture known as ClaroVTR.

As we reported, however, Claro was obliged to return 10MHz of spectrum from both the 3.5GHz and 1700MHz bands to address antitrust concerns and to sell off its satellite TV business.
