Telia Lietuva upgrades network with Ericsson gear ahead of 5G launch

After signing a partnership agreement with Ericsson in late 2020, Telia Lietuva has begun deploying the Swedish vendor’s next generation mobile base stations across Lithuania.

As reported by CommsUpdate, the operator plans to deploy around 2000 base stations across the next three years to increase the security and sustainability of its network. Telia will deploy radio access network (RAN) equipment from Ericsson as it prepares its network for the launch of commercial 5G.

Telia Lietuva began trialing Ericsson’s equipment in late March this year, and is now installing several base stations in the north of Vilnius to conduct a trial under actual conditions. Following this pilot test, a three-year network upgrade programme will commence in May.

Dan Stromberg, CEO of Telia Lietuva, said: “Digital society will need even more data and speed in the near future. We were the first in Lithuania to install a 2G, 3G, 4G, and now 5G networks. Now with Ericsson equipment, we are substantially updating the mobile technology network of all technologies in Lithuania. We invest heavily in making our services high quality, innovative and sustainable.”
